Single-hung windows have two sashes, but only the bottom one moves — it slides up and down while the top sash stays fixed. Fewer moving parts than a double-hung, and the most economical of the vertical-sliding styles.
Double-hung windows also have two sashes, and both of them slide vertically. That lets you open the top, the bottom, or both, and on most units the sashes tilt in so you can clean the outside of the glass from indoors.
